Dreamers
Dreamers
VINTAGE: .mp3 audio recording of a song originally recorded with vocals in 1985. Refrain: "We are the dreamers, the shakers the screamers! We are calling for peace! The world will hear our voices. We are the dreamers! Tomorrow, we're leaders! We are calling for peace! Peace is our choice." This song was written when I was inspired by the 12th World Festival of Youth and Students, which took place in Moscow in 1985. Yes, there was a definite "Communist" element to the event and the organizations involved, but I had and still have no problem with that. I was part of the organizing group in New York City and wanted to make a cultural contribution to the effort while also hoping to go to Moscow. Unfortunately, during the preparations I was exposed to the homophobia of Cuba, Russia and other supposedly progressive entities. Being young and naive, I was shocked and could not sustain my interest or commitment to the event or the mobilization around it. I heard later that one of Dr. King's daughters attended the Festival as part of the U.S. delegation -- and pissed off the Russians by talking about human rights. Amen, sister! If I am going to challenge my nation's human and civil rights records, I will not be shy about criticizing those of other nations. We can't build peace by oppressing people.
